Great work Kit.  Are you staining the wood or using different species? Poly gloss?

I'm just starting a longboard, my first.  I've decided to go for the 2+1 fin set up.  Can you give me placements you used?

Again, great work.  Keep posting up th goods!

Thanks heaps for the compliments guys!
They are both customs, although the shortboard was one of those ones that you want to keep! Perfect dimensions as a slightly bigger board for me.
Come to think of it, I would have kept the longboard too!

They are both Paulownia and cedar.
The cedar changes colour within even a single block, it's really beautiful.
So i'm having a lot of fun selecting couloured pieces, and semi-bookmatching matching grains.
Paulownia has nice grain, but not the visual impact of the cedar.

Dimensions:
Shortboard  6'5 x 19 1/2 x 2 1/2
Longboard  9'0 x 23 x 2 7/8

Fin positions on the longboard are:
back of box is at 6", side bites are at 15"
It's all a bit of a guess, longboards seem to differ so much?!
The theory i'm working on is that it will be set up with the side fin trailing edge in line with the single fin leading edge.
So I set the box roughly centred around that position, so it can be adjusted when riding it as a single.

OMG!  Me gusta the shortboard, please!

Killer finish, Kit, just beautiful.      What's the final gloss coat and rubout setup for those boards?

Man Huie, I'm a slow shaper these days!   My last custom was that two-part travel board, and my next is like a month away.

I've got some more interesting stuff coming up though.  I'm getting more my bizarre engineering projects instead of my "simple" shaping projects.    But I have some coolness in the works, no worries.  Wink  If everything goes as planned, I hope to have a product to offer exclusively to compsand members in the near future which should rock some worlds.

I have one that I will post up soon.
I don't think it's a true compsand though.
Bamboo deck, XPS core, bamboo bottom. No wood rails, nose or tailblock.
Just laying veneer on deck and bottom.
Maybe it's more like dipping my toe in the compsand pool. Cheesy
I'm sure I'll get all the help I need here though.

Looking forward to seeing it Todd, and anything we can do to help.

Here's a quad fish I polished last night.

Hey Jarrod!
I wanted to get your input on this design project I am starting, but I don't know if we could effectively communicate long distance.
Seems like you're pretty swamped anyway
This one is certainly worthy of your design chops though.

Talk soon my friend

Hey Kit
if you don't mind
what kind of skin thicknesses
are your working with
with the cedar and paulownia?

I usually start with 1/8" cause of my thickness planer
but it seems a little on the heavy side..
seems like 1/16" might be more reasonable.

they have these boxes of 6 panels of 8'x 6/16"x3.5"  long tongue and groove cedar at Lowes for $17.00.
I figure I'd glue three panels up and run them through the thickness planer to get it down to 1/8". Better than trying to rip them out of 3/4" thick stock and planning those.

I'm looking at using Cypress as well..
something springy and water rot resistant like paulownia versus balsa.

Gidday Bernie,
I use 2mm skins.
You could probably build them with 1.5mm (1/16") like you say.
I've just been building boards to last at the moment, I can't afford to have anyone unhappy with their custom orders!
That fish has 6oz all over, and 6 ounce under on the deck!
It's going on a plane though, it needs to be strong  Cheesy
They come out about the same weight as a poly.
I've kinda let the super light weight boards go for the moment, I like them really light, but I also hate having problems, so my weights have crept up a bit.
The gloss weighs a bit more too, and I use a fair bit more resin getting the glass super clear over the darker wood, so that adds some weight.
The heavier woods definitely add a lot to the weight, but cutting them much thinner requires some good machinery, and you do start loosing the sandwich thickness properties.
Thats when Gregs veneer boards come into their own.

Hi Kit
Sorry to ask a question that must have been covered but how do you make the bleed valve?

The hollow carbon board needs a vavle and I'm searching for ideas

Cheers
