I've just ordered a sheet of 12mm d-cell to do some rails. Not cheap here, about 100USD, and a bit worried about the order as the supplier said that the sheets are 'fragile' and sometime 'break in transport' if not packaged carefully.

I ordered H60 PS... the other option was the H60 GS but I couldn't see that the 'gridscore' version would be particularly useful for rails. The supplier reckons the PS might snap if I tried to bend around rails, and telling them I'd be using a heat gun met only with a blank look  Roll Eyes

Someone reassure me I've bought the right stuff please, else I'll phone and get them to change the order!!

Cheers

Hey Tomway,

The PS would be the way to go, the grid stuff would be better for large surfaces like boat hulls etc.

On the plus side, I've used H80 klegecell which is stiffer, for rails and it didn't snap. If you're only putting them as perimeter strips, you'll be sweet as mate!
You wont even need the heat gun unless you're going to bend it around the tail or a round nose maybe.

On the negative side, I'd be wary of the packers though, i bought a whole sheet 8' x 4' x 3/4" which cost over $200 aus a few years back for making skimboards (i needed it to be a clean full sheet) but the bastards stepped all over it and snapped it in three pieces. The place i ordered the foam from said it was the couriers fault and not theirs, bastards!

I've also been joining small offcuts with slash joins to make full rail lengths and it seems fine, it will break next to the join if it's gonna break at all. And even with all those joins is flexible enough to bend around the perimeter of my boards so you'll have no problems.

Hope yours arrives in one piece.

Thanks sparrow, exactly what I was looking for.
More thinking of the heatgun for bending the rocker prior to gluing rails.

This is my first compsand after many years deliberation... Markyv made me a kneeboard about 3 years ago and I've surfed it everyweek in Indo and never scratched it - too strong!! The only excuse I've got for making a new board with the boss/accountant/wife is to make a standup funboard for the rare small days.

Thanks again.

hey,

no worries, you 'shouldn't' need heat for that either.
Once you've cut the pieces to length give 'em a flex just to make sure they'll bend to the rocker with ease.
I've put dcell rails on with 5min epoxy and just tape to hold them in place to the rocker, easy and quick as, then shaped em after.
The H80 that i used is denser than the H60 so yours should flex easier to the rocker than the dcell i've used before.

have fun!
