Beautiful boards Huie.  I love that miniature longboard!  That would be such a cool wall hanger... or beginner board for my daughter.

There is one guy still using balsa-  Bert Burger.   I was at the Sacred Craft Expo and all the Sunovas were all balsa except one.  3mm balsa deck, 1.5 mm bottom.  Bottom skin butt jointed, top skin lapped over rails and blended.  Probably 1/2" balsa rails (4 layers of 1/8").

wha t i have done in the past is flip the skin & seal the skin first then lam it up with 4 oz
let i go  when cured  scuff it up good sqeege a coat of epoxy over skin vac it on
You lam up the inside layer of glass on the skin first? Then stick the lammed skin on with more epoxy? As opposed to laying up the glass and skin wet and sucking it down wet? Sorry for the stupid questions, just trying to make sure I understand 100%.

can't speak for huie, but presumaby to ensure the right amount of resin stays in the glass. When its under vac, especially on the deck (gravity takes resin toward foam), you risk the resin leeching out of the glass into the foam or the wood.

saw the Debbie Reynolds article on sways. Wasn't sure if it was a thread stopper or something that had happened recently. No date. All too weird trying to follow that thread for me. A great gesture giving boards to those kids, either way. No young kids should have to deal with losing parents to cancer.

beautiful boards.

Yes Toby. I think it's what huie says. I do my 3 first wood deck like this. No problems. Then i turn to 1 shot method. I have problems of adhesion when i try to use minimum resin. With silice coloidale method no problems with minimum resin.

so jeff glad to see you still over here   what tricks are you up to.

mark havent talked for a long time  hope you are well,

tomo & toby       i might have confused you whith the skins
if you flip the skins  seal it whith watever your used to doing make sure however you do it the resin from the lam you do dont get through the joins  so get it neat lay out your glass wet out     6' board wont use 4 oz of resin
let it go till you can sand it.at this point you can get everything very neat.
now i usto use another type of epoxy to vac the skin
& it was real thick so i never used any filler but just mix up a  filler spread over skin  vac down

doug good to see you active.

Nice to have some old pals back on here!!!
Hi Huie, Im still around, haven't been able to build any boards for a while, but toying with the idea of making myself a longboard and 'travelising' as Jarrod has done, so it takes up less room in the van.
Hi Doug, hope the new site upgrade isn't killing you too much Wink
Tom, that board had 2 x 4oz on the deck, one on the bottom.  i have had no problems with balsa sucking water, well sealed I guess.  I am still riding the first compsand I ever built, still lightweight and still watertight, with 1 x 4 on deck and 1 x 2 on bottom?Huh must be 6 years old at least.  I love my quad (twin to yours) just don't get to ride it much at the mo, saving it for Bali next year!!! 50th birthday pressie to myself and my family. Cheers

Just a thought about preventing pressure dings.  It was suggested to me by CJ3 (I don't know if he still checks in here once and a while).  He said to put an extra patch of veneer (t-flex construction) with the grain going crossways (perpendicular to full length veneer).  It sounds good too me.  It won't add much weight and I'm thinking that thegrain orientation will not lock up the flex that much.  I'm going to try it on my present build.  I get pretty bad denting where my boney knee sticks into the deck when duck diving.  Also where my boney arse sits waiting for inconsistent L.A. County set waves....
