Hehehe.
i am going to make a CS for myself, 76kgs.size 42
a 6.05 shortboard for mediocre waves 1-6 foot
i reckon a skin on bottom of 1mm balsa and 1.5mm balsa on top.
But how thick should i make the rails if i clamp a lay'up of balsa sheets on them?
And should i reinforce the joint of top skin to rail? and bottom too while we are at it.
Cheers guys

Hiya Wouter,  most of the guys making shortboards are bagging on the bottom skin, then the rails, shaping the deck & rails together, and then bagging the top skin over the edge of the rail for a little reinforcement along the edge.  Sand that joint smooth, then lay up (or bag on) both sides' outer glass.  I think your balsa schedule sounds fine - I use all 1/16" top & bottom balsa on longboards, which I think is the same as 1.5mm.

hey wouter
i use either 15mm or 12 mm
id go with 15 for your thinner skins
adds a bit more strength and allows for a less critical tolerence when final rounding over the rails

i use 3 to 5 mm for the deck skin
and 2 to 4 mm for the bottom
and dont reinforce anything underneath
if i was using thinner skins id look at reinforcing around the rails if the boards were coming out to flexible

im in the thick skin low density core school

Hey Wouter, i am thinking of doing the same thing but for better quality waves.
I am a similar weight to you and 170cm tall.

what is you outline going to be like?
How thick and wide are you going?

My thoughts are curvy rounded pin (probably like a CI black beauty) outline.
6'0 x 19.5 x 2
my 'normal' pupe would be 6'2 x 18 3/4 x 2 1/2

what do the experts think?

Benny, what thickness rails do you use for your longboards? would you thin them out for a shorty?

Thanks everybody!!

2 Scot ;
Will be going for 6.04 and with 19.5-20.0 width and a swallow tail.
4.5 nose rocker  and 2.2 tail, with some copied rocker of the profile page i once printed from pipedreamsurfboards.
want to keep thickness down, for sensitivity and flex. i never made a compsand, so i do want to be sure it flexes, since flex is sometime killed with all the heavy wood and glass.
Wider board that are thinner will flex a bit more since there is more water pressure over the whole surface.
cheers.

hey wouter
an often overlooked issue is
vacuum pressure (i never go over 10 hg) pref about 6 or 7
and excess resin on the inside

thin skins will allow for a flexible board using balsa
but the decks compressive strength will be reduced imo
but its still fine because its still way stronger than pupe
