Please forgive the redundancy.  This was posted on Swaylocks also.   For some reason it seems appropriate over here.  It's a 12' SUP for my girlfriend who wanted to be able to flat water paddle with our dog.

Lots of advice was provided by just about everyone who is a regular here.  Ben Sparks in particular provided inspiration, technical advice and moral support.  Many thanks to all of you.

Anyway, here are some pics of my vacuum system, homemade vent, grip handle, etc...

Looks good, what is the deck? It's kinda dark in the picture? Is it a grip pad type thing?

John, I didn't notice the finger holes before.  What did you machine them out of?  Did you cut a ridge around the base when you glassed it in, like a finbox?

What - no cupholders?   Wink

Hi surfer_dave...

It's carbon fiber on the outside on the deck.  Since the pics were taken it has a 3/4 traction pad.  I fogged black around the edges because of some unsightly frothing when I did my laps from the bottom.

Hi Benny -

I built a little box of scrap balsa, "lined" it with melted paraffin and stuck 4 eyedrop bottles to the bottom for the finger holes.  Epoxy and carbon scraps were stirred up and poured in to the "mold" if you can call it that.  It was installed exactly like a finbox and seems able to support what little side load it encounters in the course of carrying it.

Hi Surffoils -

Thanks very much!  It really was a blast to take it out on it's maiden voyage on New Year's Day.  We drank champagne and several people gave it a try.  All were stoked... none more than I was.

Not sure what kind of details you're looking for.

Dimensions -

12' X 31" X 22 1/2" N X 20" T X 5" TH.

It has 6" Nose rocker and 4" tail rocker.

10" X 4 1/2" twin keels

I hotwired two blanks, sliced and Gorilla Glued to get the desired width.  1.5 lb/cu ft EPS block via Home Depot with 3/16" balsa sheet, 4 oz cloth and some carbon fiber. The rail build is balsa sheet and Mahogany.

I would definitely try and taper the rail shape a lot more next time before adding the skins.  There was a single layer of perimeter rail attached before skins which overlap that first piece on both sides.

It came out quite heavy (40 lbs) but it's a huge board and I didn't consider lightweight a priority.  I'd like to think it's going to be around a long time for anybody to use and not have to worry about it.
