Take a listen to Paul

So far I think Simon has interviewed Ben, Roy, Gary Young and others.

Hey,

I looked at the Grain site...I don't envy those guys in winter, but that is a lovely workshop/ol' Barn.

Nice boards.

Am I waaaay behind the times in saying you have to check www.hesssurfboards.com?

(Remember, my heads been up my nether-regions for a while...)

Bloody delicious...I want those veneers...

Hey Huie,

I did a lot of work with Veneers in Thailand where the teak is beautiful and CHEAP...Alas...

I worked out that veneer at 0.6 mm is too thin for a decent sandwich on 1lb foam. So no good for decks. This is the thing with the Hess boards...I reckon they'll dent easily, unless the claimed schedule is not the whole story.

For decks, veneer worked out to be really tough when put on top of 2.5mm balsa, with glass bagged in between. The boards however then came out really stiff...good longboard but not short.

Veneer only on a bottom...I did'nt get a chance to go there, but that might be fine.

I remember walking into a veneer supplier in Melbourne years ago, for a totally unrelated purpose...I hope they are still there.

There is a lot to be said for foam skins on the ease of workability and waterproof factors, but, yes, I would like to go the high-end timber direction.

hi josh, i was interested in your comments about veneers at 0.6mm being too thin for a sandwhich skin over 1 lb eps , i have made a couple of veneer boards and just used more glass either side of the veneer to give that extra strength, you gain a slight  bit of weight  but both boards came out really strong and still with no deck dents, pete

Hey Pete,

Indeed but I'm obsessed with super-light! No, it's not for everyone...I guess it would be OK to allow a board to be a little heavier than mine!
