Hey Aussie builders
Do you have any good contacts or tips for foam suppliers. I'm located on the Nth Coast NSW.
Looking for divinycell or corcell sheets and large eps blocks.  Any tips or advice much appreciated.

You can get divinycell and corecell from FGI in Sydney.  They also have some honey comb stuff and balsa products (haven't used them).  They might be able to put you onto eps suppliers too, for my first board I glued up 40mm sheet foam from hardwear and general.

Fro EPS, I have found that http://www.fxthemes.com.au/home.htm are really helpful and they can cut outline and rockers.

Huie,
Can you tell us more about the blanks you working on? Or is that for a new thread?

Cheers,
Scot

Hey Marsh
Thanks for the reply, I've done my first two from coolroom sheet offcuts  2400 x 150 x 100 mm which I glued up on edge with polyurethane glue. Shaping nightmare but a good cheap intro to compsand building.

Huie those blanks sound like a huge breakthrough , I'm getting in line for some. Been using the Kinetics  epoxy for  about 12 mths on eps and poly and it's a great product.

Dexter how did you go with aquiring foam?
I'm looking at getting block foam from Australian Urethane & Styrene Pty which are in Sydney.  The only size the have to purchace (that they told me) which can then be cut down is 5000 x 1200 x 600mm.  So it's pretty solid and will make a lot of blanks/cores.  Their densities are:

11,  13.5,  16,  19,  24,  28 kg/m3.

Reading G.Loher's post on sways about the wmd compsand I was considering going with the denser 24 or even 28kg/m3 stuff which I think is closer to 2lb in U.S terms.
Anyone have any thoughts/advise on which one to get?

i think youll find that most of the builders here doing good boards are using the lightest foam available
most of us have built 2 pound foam shortboards and they are dogs
too stiff
gregs right about a lot of things and his resin is top notch
but im not keen on the wmd compsand method myself

Thanks for the advice paul, the lighter foam is also considerably cheaper...  Interesting to note though that firewire are doing 2lb with bamboo and carbon rods?

I'd be interested to know what weight those firewires are.

The more density you put in the core, the more the core dictates the way the board rides....
The whole point of using sandwich skins and perimeter stringers is to get great feel from those, and the core just keeps it all the right shape without adding much of it's own influence.

EPS is not a very lively foam - thats why we use wood and HD foam.
PU and XPS are lively, but both have durability issues

Hey Marsh been dealing with all sorts of dramas lately leaving little time for checking the forums. I went with 19kg/m3 foam  approx  1.2lb/ft3 I think. Bought a billet from Hi Tex Foamworks in Brisbane talk to Rod . Corecell and Airex from ATL on the Goldy . I'm building all sorts so I found the full billet is the most economical and gives me 16 longboards and 16 shorties of various types.
My next mission is affordable balsa skins , any tips anyone ?
