broaden your horizons

hi guys, thought about expanding the site content with the new upgrade
i hope to encourage hollow wood builders and poly builders to post information and pics of boards
i think we can become a more comprehensive one stop shop
by sifting through posts and re editing future content in an easily downloadable article will make it easy to navigate to catorgorized information
i for one have found that learning traditional polyester glassing techniques has improvedthe cosmetics of my compsands no end
also hollow wood board intrigue me as well
i have a design in mind based on Roy stuarts excellent build method except using foam framework
maybe like danny hess does

I like us having our main focus on compsand style boards...
But I think there is
definately
space here for anyone from other "genres" of boardbuilding who is able to adhere to the community spirit and mutual respect we require.
So I am more than happy for us to make space here for anyone fitting that criteria, should they want to make use of it... Especially once we have moved and have unlimited space and bandwidth
Viva la difference!

imho we should concentrate on compsand without necessarily alienating other types of constuction types. There are plenty of sites out there for hollows and pupe?

Maybe a separate forum for "alternative" building methods, like PU?

10c worth from the peanut gallery:
Either it's allowed or not, no use having it allowed under sufferance as nobody wants to feel guilty for contributing 'OT' stuff.
The more surfing related posts the better surely ?
And of course the perfect excuse is that most 'other' methods are actually composite structures anyway.

I vote we just interleve it all as we currently do.
And just like the rest of our community anyone vocal enough and wanting a blog or whatever will be offered one (insert new site focus here).

I have been looking for a reason to butt back in, has been awhile, have been lurkin tho. heres a board i have just built up, its using blue xps as rail stringers and a centre stringer to create an "airframe" 3.5mm radiata on the bottom and 5.5mm on the top both blend into the rails. it has inserts for the fins also. plan to build two, the skins are ready for the next one but i wanted to complete one first and make the mistakes, so the next one goes more smoothly.
i am goin to move in your direction paul, i love buildin compsands but they take awhile for me to complete with family, room restrictions and cost etc all playing a part, compa's are def the beta tech once you nail the build methodology. but i feel my board design aspect lacking, so i thought i would start doing "standard" foam boards for myself and friends, to increase my board count and get a deeper understanding of board design itself and also concerntrate on getting my finishes beta.
your finishes are lookin real good tho paul!
6'4 x 22 x 2 chch grovel board
anywho here its pre getting lam'd (hope these pics come out)
exuse the maskin tape, i tore out some foam in some spots while shaping, so have just repaired it.

Good Idea Paul, There seems to be a disconnect between design and construction.
I've been doing HD EPS/epoxy and the odd poly and working on design rather than Compsands simply as a way to improve my shaping/design skills. (cheap and fast)
I lurk both here and sways and find that some people seem to place alot of emphasis on materials rather than shape/design.
Since you picked up those cheap PU blanks your shaping has improved and that can only help when you do another compsand.
Nothing worse than a high tech, super light compsands that took ages to complete that surfs like a hollow core door! (yeah I have made a few like that !)
Keep up the good work

im looking forward to simplyfying and just buildin foamy's for a bit. have you been getting your blanks from hardcore surf? i saw the board u had on trademe for 120, farrk that was a sweet cheap stick, i saw one of barrons boards down here, hes done a few epoxys over pu and xtr, his finish was dodge tho, had a few dry spots, and he's sellin it fo 8 hundy.

haha lol the sale fell through moonfish. i got 300 plus grip and leggy second time round.
did pretty good on that one actually.. that was a reshape on a gun blank
ive done a couple of 5 2's, 4 over 6ft and a couple of mals from scratch
post up that brd file if you dont mind?
i just got a nelsons board back and its got pressure damage from heavy foots
thats 3mm airex and 6 oz over, 2 oz under
the 2 oz fails first in splits and then the airex splits on the same line and then the core splits on the same lines its so weired
definately put 4 oz under on the footwells if you using light skin material
i used to think the problem was balsa and in some ways once the balsa lets go it floods with water
but basically if corecell or airex lets go, you still have to repair it same way, even tho the skin stays reasonably dry
the key is i think make the whole board light but make sure high wear areas get the treatment
if you look at boards over the years
they are in perfect condition everywhere else except high wear areas
so in someways 6oz all over is overkill . i will try 4 oz all over and then beef up the hardwear spots
makes a lighter board as well

hey offshore
theres always been little remarks and hints that compsanders cant shape
kinda like a little dig.
Huies been doing it longer then anyone and a lot of us are getting the hang of it.
also i see with the CDD blank that compsands will evolve and that traditional shaping and glassing techniques will put compsand at the forefront of board technology..
besides that, CDD is machine shapable so if we learn how to glass them clean, then they will be standout surfboards in both technology and design.
although i think the site should remain basically composite driven.. its about time we opened up a little to encourage people to post their knowledge on oher topics

Shit he must have a heavy foot with 3mm and 6oz, was it 60 or 8o grade? i have had issues on a corecell board i did for myself, it developed a crack along the seam of the rail, between the 2 layers. i think it was due to the glue joint or lack thereof, letting it move/shear enough that it fractured the weakest point....the glass.
heres the .brd anyway
you get any waves 2day?
