1  Compsand General / Composite Surfboard Discussion / Re: Super simple... but what was it? on: October 07, 2008, 07:33:47 AM
Kiteboard might make sense.  Definitely not symmetrical.

Its not a ramp, the pieces are just sitting in the wrong order.  It looks like someone cut their rocker profile on 3 pieces of 2x10 lumber, then attached plywood to the cut edges of both sets of pieces.  Whatever was put between the plywood sheets, then, could be clamped with the 2x lumber acting as strongbacks.

2  Compsand General / Composite Surfboard Discussion / Super simple... but what was it? on: October 04, 2008, 06:39:57 AM
Camping down south last week at a beach, couldn't help myself.  Had to take photos of what someone left half-burnt in a fire pit.

I know its a rocker table.  Or a press.  Or both.  But for what?  Too much for a skim.  It was maybe 4.5' long... paipo?  Weird kneeboard?  Something for sand or snow?

And what was pressed together in it - thin plies of wood, wood & foam, balsa & linoleum...?

I love mysteries.  There's something here in the simplicity from which I think we can learn.  Compsand application, with no vac, no weight, no electricity?

And why did they take it to the beach & try to burn the evidence?   Huh
3  Compsand General / Composite Surfboard Discussion / Re: is 2.5 core 1/4 stringer too much? on: September 18, 2008, 08:03:03 AM
You can always remove the stringer.  Easy peasy there, just run a handsaw along it, true up the foam, and glue it back together without.

2.5# is good core for veneers - not 'real' balsa (or other wood) skins, but 1/32" wood veneers, like Surftech.  I've done 'em before and they come out stiff, but light & strong.  And at under 8', you have a lot of choices.

Tips - hand lam your shaped blank first (3 or 4 oz cloth) to stop the epoxy draining and so its tough enough that if the veneer cracks it won't affect the blank.  Use LOTS of veneer softener.  Do one side at a time.  Make relief cuts in your veneer and be ready to patch anyway.  You probably won't even need outer glass.

Definitely won't need perimeter stringers or rail wood.

Laissez-faire, amigo.  No worries.

PRCalDude - jump right into a composite of some kind.  Take it from me - 6'2, 220, size 13 feet - you'll love the feel of a dependable deck.

Welcome to the site

Greetings, Afoaf  Grin

Your new board on Sways is bitchin'  You'll love Probox, too.

One request - can we skip the Hicksy's speedo avatar over here?  It makes my eyes burn.

Looks great, Mook!

I'll never get tired of seeing longboards in the all-wood look.

He sure is, Paul.  Biggest guy around.

Sounds good.  So "point" as in Campus Point?

If so, I totally agree on the size.  Paddling speed & covering distance are way more important than duckdiving, where you live.

Very nice, Point.  The order of your process & your materials used are pretty much the same as mine.  I like the rail radius and the color of the wood you used.

6'7"... you a big guy?

Edit - oh yeah, we've all had noses like that.   Wink

Noice.  Paint pens on the foam?

Paul, your shapes - never mind the tech, just the shapes! - are looking real professional.  You've gotta be proud of this latest round of work...  Top notch, my friend, all of it.

John, I didn't notice the finger holes before.  What did you machine them out of?  Did you cut a ridge around the base when you glassed it in, like a finbox?

What - no cupholders?   Wink

Paul, that "cheap board" looks anything but...  Is it for yourself or a client?  I really dig that wave/strongarm in the middle of your logo.

Hi John, glad you started down this path.  Always good to get a few more builders who like the lines of the bigger boards.  How much of that block of foam do you still have?   Grin
